Hong Kong: PCPD offers advice to prevent fraud involving AI
On August 1, 2024, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) provided advice to organizations on identifying fraudulent tricks involving artificial intelligence (AI) deepfake technology. The PCPD noted that in the first half of 2024, it received nearly 600 inquiries relating to fraudulent activities targeting the personal data of the enquirers, which represented an increase of nearly 90% from 2023.
The PCPD also highlighted a surge in various types of scams aimed at swindling citizens out of money and/or personal data, including:
- scams using instant messaging applications;
- scams on social media platforms;
- scam videos using AI technology; and
- telephone scams.
Furthermore, the PCPD advised organizations to beware of various forms of fraudulent tricks, particularly those involving AI deepfake technology.
