Hamburg: HmbBfDI requests information from Clubhouse regarding use of data
The Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information ('HmbBfDI') announced, on 2 February 2021, that together with other German supervisory authorities, it had requested information from the social networking app, Clubhouse, in order to review the app's compliance with European data protection law. In particular, the HmbBfDI highlighted that companies targeting European users must respect their rights to information, access, objection, and deletion, while also ensuring that there are technical and organisational measures in place to protect the data.
Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Johannes Caspar, stated, ''Unfortunately, it happens again and again that providers from the USA push their way into the European market or are simply successful with their products and services without complying with the most basic data protection requirements of the European digital market. It is important to point out quickly which rules apply on the playing field of Europe and to enforce them. It is in the interest of all European users to be able to make use of services that do not violate their own rights or those of others, and that do not open up to the principles of privacy protection only after years of successful user loyalty in Europe.''
