Guernsey: ODPA releases data breach statistics for third quarter of 2023

The Office of the Data Protection Authority (ODPA) released, on October 10, 2023, its latest breach statistics for the period between July 2023 and September 2023. The ODPA noted that 38 personal data breaches had been reported affecting 77,321 people. Notably, the ODPA highlighted that one of the cases, which caused the unusually high number of affected individuals, involved the sending of an email to an incorrect recipient that contained a significant volume of personal data. The ODPA noted that it has seen a trend in recent quarters where emails containing personal data are sent either to the wrong person or to a personal email address, with this quarter seeing a doubling of these errors compared to the second quarter of 2023. To this end, the ODPA reminded companies of steps to reduce risks.
