Guernsey: ODPA releases data breach statistics for fourth quarter of 2023

On February 8, 2024, the Office of the Data Protection Authority (ODPA) released its latest breach statistics for the period between October 2023 and December 2023. The ODPA noted that 39 personal data breaches had been reported, affecting 1,115 people. This brings the total number of breaches reported in 2023 to 145, with a total of 9,908,526 people being affected.

The ODPA observed a continuing trend of emails containing personal data being sent to the wrong person, with the fourth quarter of 2023 seeing a further increase in errors in comparison to the second quarter of 2023, from 24 incidents as opposed to 11. To this end, the ODPA reminded companies of steps to take to reduce risks and of how broad the legal definition of a data breach is.
