Germany: BfDI issues 2020 activity report
The Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information ('BfDI') issued, on 25 March 2021, its annual report for 2020. In particular, the report highlights that the BfDI received 7,878 complaints and inquiries and conducted 7,212 telephone consultations in 2020. Furthermore, the report outlines that 10,024 data protection violations were reported to the BfDI in 2020, a large number of which were from tax offices, job centres, and telecommunications companies.
In addition, the report addresses the measures that were adopted in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of the Court of Justice of the European Union's judgment in Data Protection Commissioner v. Facebook Ireland Limited, Maximillian Schrems (C-311/18), amendments to existing legislation, as well as the consequences of Brexit.
