Germany: BfDI announces appointment of a new Federal Commissioner

On September 3, 2024, the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI) announced that Prof. Dr. Louisa Specht-Riemenschneider was appointed as the new Federal Commissioner, after having been elected on May 16, 2024.

Prof. Dr. Louisa Specht-Riemenschneider highlighted that during her term, she will focus on the areas of health, artificial intelligence (AI), and security. Furthermore, the new Federal Commissioner holds a "firm belief that AI supervision belongs in the hands of the data protection supervisory authorities. Because we are the only authorities that are completely independent and already have the necessary AI experts."
