France: CNIL publishes information on Brexit and data protection
The French data protection authority ('CNIL') published, on 31 January 2020, information on the impact of Brexit on data protection. In particular, CNIL highlighted that for the duration of the transitional period stipulated in the Withdrawal Agreement between the UK and the EU, the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) ('GDPR') will continue to apply in the UK until 31 December 2020. In addition, CNIL noted that companies in France and the UK do not need to rely on GDPR guarantees applicable to transfers of data from the EU to third countries, and are not required to fulfil any further formalities.
