EU: EIT Health report on AI in healthcare calls for urgent EU reforms
The European Institute of Innovation and Technology's Health Think Tank ('EIT Health') published, on 20 April 2021, a new report on AI calling for urgent reforms in EU healthcare systems. In particular, the report identifies a range of focus areas that need to be addressed at an EU and national level, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, to maximise the potential of AI and technology in healthcare. More specifically, the report recommends improving collaboration and exchange of best practices across the EU, building on existing networks and infrastructures to support AI integration, improving education and skills, and developing value-based financial models that incorporate AI and acknowledge the longer-term cost-saving.
In addition, on the EU level, the report highlights a need to establish a secure, trustworthy and competitive cloud infrastructure in Europe that would benefit public administration, businesses and citizens, while also calling for clear guidelines and common standards on data management and governance, including in relation to data collection, infrastructure and maintenance, storage, access, anonymisation, governance, and security, as well as guidance on best practice in the development and regulation of AI solutions.
