China: CAC announces cybersecurity review of CNKI

The Cybersecurity Administration of China ('CAC') announced, on 24 June 2022, that in order to prevent national data security risks, maintain national security, and protect public interests in accordance with the Cybersecurity Law 2016, the Data Security Law, and the Cybersecurity Review Measures, the Cyber ​​Security Review Office interviewed the person in charge of Tongfang CNKI (Beijing) Knowledge Network Technology Co., Ltd. In particular, the CAC highlighted that following the interview, the Cyber ​​Security Review Office announced the initiation of a cybersecurity review on CNKI. More specifically, the CAC explained that it has been reported that CNKI has a large amount of personal information and important data in key industries such as national defence, telecommunications, transportation, natural resources, health care, and finance, as well as sensitive information such as important scientific and technological achievements, and key technological developments.
