China: CAC addresses camera surveillance

The Cybersecurity Administration of China ('CAC') released, on 11 June 2021, a statement on the use of techniques to hack and control cameras in homes, in public places, and on smartphones. In particular, the CAC noted that such actions seriously infringe on the privacy of citizens. To this end, the CAC noted that it, along with four other departments, had decided to organise nationwide centralised management to address camera peeping from May to August 2021. Specifically, the CAC outlined that camera manufacturers must improve their product security capabilities in accordance with relevant regulations and standards for data and information security. In addition, the CAC highlighted that video surveillance cloud platforms that provide public services and related companies must strictly fulfil their main responsibilities for network security, strengthen cloud platform network security protection, and implement remote data security protection responsibility on video surveillance apps.
