Canada: OPC publishes guidance for IoT manufacturers and Canadians using smart devices
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada published, on 20 August 2020, guidance for manufacturers of Internet of Things ('IoT') devices ('the Manufacturer Guidance') to help comply with federal privacy law, and guidance for Canadians on how to use smart devices while protecting their personal information ('the Consumer Guidance'). In particular, the Manufacturer Guidance offers practical information and best practices for IoT device manufacturers on Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act ('PIPEDA') principles and how they apply to them, as well as information on complying with PIPEDA with a checklist of what must be done as best practice. Furthermore, the OPC noted that the Consumer Guidance helps Canadians learn the basics of how to protect their privacy while enjoying the benefits of smart devices, providing tips on identifying and reducing risks such as checking how their personal information is used and shared, among other things.
