Canada: Bill C-69 amending bill for Digital Charter Implementation Act 2022 completes report stage

On June 19, 2024, Bill C-69 for an Act to implement certain provisions of the budget completed the report stage in the House of Commons and proceeded to the third reading on the same date. Bill C-69, among other things, proposes amendments to Bill C-27 for the Digital Charter Implementation Act 2022.

Bill C-69 would allow reporting entities, such as financial organizations, to disclose personal information to another organization without an individual's knowledge or consent if the disclosure is reasonable for the purpose of detecting or deterring money laundering, terrorist activity financing, or sanctions evasion, if making the disclosure with knowledge or consent would compromise the ability to detect those crimes, and if the disclosure is made in accordance with the regulations.
