California: Bill requiring deletion of data used for user authentication on social media re-referred to Committee

On April 10, 2024, Assembly Bill 2461 for an act to add Chapter 22.9 (commencing with Section 22685) to Division 8 of the Business and Professions Code, relating to social media platforms was re-referred to the Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection. This follows the bill's second reading with amendments on April 9, 2024. The bill was read for the first time on February 13, 2024.

In particular, the bill provides that a social media platform that authenticates the identity of a user shall delete any personal information submitted by the user to the social media platform for that purpose within 30 days of the date upon which the social media platform authenticates the user's identity.
