Brazil: Bill seeking to postpone LGPD enforcement to 2022 introduced to Chamber
Bill No. 500/2021 amending Law No. 13.709 of 14 August 2018, General Personal Data Protection Law (as amended by Law No. 13.853 of 8 July 2019) ('LGPD') and extending the date of entry into force of provisions of the LGPD was introduced, on 19 February 2021, to the Chamber of Deputies. In particular, the bill would amend Article 65 of the LGPD to change the date when fines would take effect from 1 August 2021 to 1 January 2022. Furthermore, the justification of the bill highlighted that there are serious considerations regarding the survival of companies in Brazil, in this period of economic crisis due to COVID-19, thus, valuing the preservation of the economy in this respect, where fines could further harm companies.
