Belgium: DPA investigates potential security breach on CovidScan app

The Belgian Data Protection Authority ('Belgian DPA') announced, on 13 October 2021, that it had been aware of a potential security incident relating to the validation and processing of Covid Safe Tickets via the CovidScan app in order to provide proof of vaccination, immunity, or a negative test result for COVID-19. In particular, the Belgian DPA noted that the potential data breach may have impacted more than 39,000 individuals, and that it considers the same as serious given the sensitive nature of the data concerned. In response, the Belgian DPA further clarified, on 21 October 2021, that it had commenced formal investigation into the CovidScan app on its own initiative immediately after it had received notification of a potential security incident.
