Belarus: President signs draft law on personal data

The National Centre of Legal Information of the Republic of Belarus announced, on 14 May 2021, that the President of the Republic of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, signed the draft law on personal data on 7 May 2021. In particular, the draft law outlines that personal data processing must be proportionate to the stated purposes and should ensure a fair balance between the interests of all parties.

Furthermore, the draft law provides for, among other things, a procedure for the cross-border transfer of personal data, a number of data subject rights, and additional safeguards against arbitrary and uncontrolled data collection and use. In addition, the draft law defines the procedure for the creation of an authorised data protection body responsible for handling complaints, approving cross-border data transfers, and clarifying issues related to the application of data protection legislation.

The draft law will come into force six months after its publication in the Official Gazette.

National Information Centre confirms entry into effect date

The National Information Centre confirmed, on 4 June 2021, that the law will enter into effect on 15 November 2021.
