Australia: OAIC closes inquiry into MediSecure data breach

On September 13, 2024, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) announced that it had closed its inquiries into the MediSecure data breach.

The OAIC explained that it would not pursue an investigation into the personal information handling practices of MediSecure as the possible remedies that the OAIC could obtain for the community would not be proportionate to the resources required for a comprehensive investigation.

Further, the OAIC noted that as MediSecure entered administration on June 3, 2024, the OAIC's inquiries focused on ensuring that MediSecure notified individuals impacted by the breach, so they could take preventative action to protect their personal information, while the OAIC worked with other agencies to ensure a whole-of-government approach to building awareness about the matter.
