Alberta: OIPC issues statement following launch of AHS contact-tracing app

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta ('OIPC') Information and Privacy Commissioner, Jill Clayton, issued, on 1 May 2020, a statement ('the Statement') in response to the Government of Alberta's contact-tracing application ('the App'), following a previous OIPC comment on the need for a Privacy Impact Assessment ('PIA'). In particular, the Statement supports Alberta Health Services' ('AHS') measures to use contact tracing in response to the current pandemic in a less intrusive way, and highlights positive components of the App including ensuring it is voluntary, collects minimal information, and allows individuals to control their usage of the App. In addition, the Statement outlines that the OIPC received a PIA on the App and an initial review has been conducted with requests for clarifications sent to the AHS such as confirming that the data collected from the App is used for contact tracing and not for any other purpose. Finally, the Statement notes that the OIPC will continue to monitor the implementation of the App.
