African Bodies: AU launches initiative for privacy legislation harmonisation across Africa

OneTrust DataGuidance confirmed, on 13 November 2020 with Aaron Olajide, Ademola Adeyoju, and Mallick Bolakale, Project Leads at the Innovation Law Club Africa, that the African Union ('AU') has launched an initiative for the harmonisation of privacy legislation across Africa. In particular, the initiative is being tested in about five countries in Africa and is modelled on international standards such as the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) ('GDPR'). However, further information on the initiative is not yet publicly available and the harmonisation framework is currently not legally binding.
