Saxony: SächsDSB issues 2022 activity report

The Saxon data protection authority (SächsDSB) announced, on May 16, 2023, that it had published its 2022 activity report. The SächsDSB stated that the report focuses on the SächsDSB's data protection supervision, statistics, the interpretation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), as well as sanctions and data protection case law, and reported on the following actions it undertook in 2022, among others:

  • criticism against the use of Facebook fan pages, which prompted proceedings against the Saxon State Chancellery;
  • private and public use of video surveillance; and
  • work in relation to data breaches, data subjects' right to information, online subscription models, and websites and applications.

Moreover, with regard to specific statistics throughout 2022, the SächsDSB highlighted that the number of new administrative offense reports in 2022 was slightly lower than that in 2021 and that unauthorized video surveillance made up the largest proportion of administrative offense proceedings in the private sector. Furthermore, SächsDSB reported that 1,068 complaints were made in 2022, slightly below the 1,254 figure in 2021. Additionally, the SächsDSB highlighted that data breach reports have increased, noting an upward trajectory for the past few years, where the most common breaches in 2022 concerned incorrect dispatch and loss of postal documents, open email distribution lists, loss of data carriers through burglary or theft, and the access of personal data through cybercrime.
