International: EU and New Zealand trade agreement enters into force
On May 1, 2024, the European Commission announced that the EU – New Zealand free trade agreement entered into force, following the completion of the ratification procedure by New Zealand on March 25, 2024.
The agreement brings opportunities for businesses in digital trade, including facilitating data flows, preventing unjustified data localization requirements, and maintaining high standards of personal data protection.
In particular, the agreement foresees that both parties shall publish information on the protection of personal data and privacy that it provides to users of digital trade, including:
- how individuals can pursue a remedy for a breach of protection of personal data or privacy arising from digital trade; and
- guidance and other information regarding the compliance of businesses with applicable legal requirements protecting personal data and privacy.
