Canada: OPC signs MoU with provincial privacy authorities

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada ('OPC') announced, on 10 May 2022, that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding ('MoU') with the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta, the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia, and the Quebec Commission on Access to Information ('CAI'). In addition, the OPC noted that the MoU promotes domestic and international enforcement collaboration in the privacy sector. In particular, the MoU outlines that its declared objective is to set out a framework supporting federal and provincial coordination, to the end of:

  • enhancing information sharing between parties;
  • consulting on enforcement matters of mutual interest;
  • discussing policy and developing public education and compliance documents;
  • improving the capacity and impact of oversight activities by reducing duplication of tasks; and
  • ensuring consistent oversight of private sector privacy laws.
